SPANISH FORK, Utah, Oct. 10, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Nine students at Spanish Fork’s Mountainland Applied Technology College were hospitalized Monday morning after ammonia mixed with cleaning supplies created toxic fumes.
Lt. Matt Johnson, spokesman for Spanish Fork Police Department, said the students reported they were suffering from headaches and dizziness.
Questar Gas came to the college to see if the students could have been exposed to carbon monoxide, but was unable to detect any CO2 issues.
Johnson said it was then discovered ammonia and cleaning supplies had been mixed in either the cosmetology or dental assisting classrooms, creating toxic fumes in the building.
The building has been evacuated as emergency crews work to identify the problem.
Johnson said the students were taken to hospital in alpha condition, which means they were checked out and then will be released.
