SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 26, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A bicyclist was rushed to the hospital in critical condition late Tuesday night after he was struck by a vehicle on West Temple Street.

Sgt. Brent Shelby, Utah Highway Patrol, told Gephardt Daily the accident happened shortly before 9 p.m. on southbound West Temple, just south of the intersection with 900 South.

The bicyclist was traveling in the middle lanes and was struck by a vehicle traveling south in the same lane.

“We’re unsure at this time why the bicyclist was in those lanes. We’re trying to determine that as part of our investigation,” Shelby said.

The driver was cooperating with officials, and Shelby said there was no indication of any impairment on the driver’s part.

“She stopped immediately and rendered aid with passersby,” he said. “Unfortunately, she just appears to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“We’re trying to determine the involvement of the bicycle — what they were doing and where they were going. Bicycles are allowed to travel, but are required to travel in the right-most lane, and he was just about to enter an on-ramp lane.”

The Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team was on scene, and all lanes of southbound West Temple were expected to be closed from 900 South to 1000 South until about midnight.
