SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, July 9, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake Board of Directors has appointed Jason Mazuran the chief of the newly independent Unified Police.

Mazuran is a 29 year law enforcement veteran, and served as UPD chief for six years when UPD was linked with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The two organizations were separated by a 2023 legislative bill, turned law, that went into effect July 1 of this year, so Mazuran is now chief of the independent law enforcement agency.

He previously has been the chief of the Salt Lake County Protective Services Bureau and the UPD Midvale Precinct. Mazuran is also a veteran of the UPD SWAT Team, a UPD news release says.

Mazuran will step into this role overseeing the communities UPD continues to serve, including Emigration Canyon, Millcreek, Holladay, Brighton, White City, Midvale, Kearns, Magna and Copperton.

The Unified Police Department will continue its range of investigative units including property crimes, fraud, domestic violence, special victims, violent crimes. UPD also will maintain its specialized services in Forensic Investigations, K-9, Drones, Collision Analysis and Reconstruction, School Resource Officers, and UPD SWAT.

The main administrative building for UPD will be in Millcreek at 1330 E. Chambers Ave., Suite 220, Millcreek. Many of the investigative units have now been moved to other precincts within UPD such as Midvale, Kearns, Millcreek, and Holladay.
