SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah, July 28, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Two parents and their 4-year-old daughter were severely injured Saturday night when their van burst into flames in the Pelican Bay Marina parking lot.
Saratoga Springs Fire Chief Jess Campbell said the incident happened about 8:20 p.m. while the family was towing their boat from the marina after an outing on Utah Lake.
Campbell said the van had broken down when it was suddenly engulfed in flames.
The parents managed to rescue their 4-year-old daughter, who was unable to unbuckle her seat belt, but they suffered severe burns to their arms, backs and faces. Two older children escaped on their own and were reportedly uninjured.
The 4-year-old, according to Campbell, was also severely burned. She and her mother were flown by medical helicopter to the University of Utah Burn Center while the husband was taken to the U. by ground ambulance, he said.
Investigators had yet to determine the fire’s cause, but believe a number of gasoline cans found inside the van likely fueled the blaze.
A GoFundMe account has been established to assist the family with medical expenses.
