COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah, July 11, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The Cottonwood Heights City Council has enacted a temporary ban on aerial fireworks after they sparked three fires on the July 4 holiday.
Fireworks are legal to use in Utah on two Utah holidays, Independence Day and July 24, Pioneer Day, and on three days before and after those holidays. The city’s ban will prohibit the use of aerial fireworks — defined as those designed to travel 15 or more feet in the air — within city limits in the periods before, after and on July 24.
Residents packed the council meeting, most pleading for the ban after the recent fires threatened their families and friends. A few argued for no ban, citing their preference for freedom.
In the end, the City Council opted for the ban due to residents’ safety concerns.
