Body found in drainage pipe near Jordan River; police investigating

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 18, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are investigating after a badly decomposed body was found in a drainage pipe near the Jordan River Wednesday morning.

The body was found at about 9:10 a.m. when Salt Lake City Water Department workers were cleaning out the pipe near the river, Salt Lake City Police Detective Richard Chipping.

Fire rescue responded to help remove the body, which was found at 1310 S. 900 West. The decomposition was exacerbated because the body was exposed to water in the drainage pipe, Chipping said.

He added that information about the body is highly limited at this point because of the state of decomposition. He said the gender of the body and how long it was there have not been determined.

The body has been taken to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office in Salt Lake City and Chipping said it would be there for some time because some of the tests to determine identity can be lengthy.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
