SAND HOLLOW STATE PARK, Utah, July 18, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — The manager of Sand Hollow State Park confirmed Thursday that an ATV accident near there took the life of a 13-year-old boy on Wednesday.
The accident happened in an adjacent area called Sand Mountain, managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
“The Park was notified at about 2:45 p.m.,” park manager Johnathan Hunt told Gephardt Daily. “A family from Parker, Colorado, just came to enjoy a vacation, and they rented two side-by-side ATVs.
“Being unfamiliar with the sand, it appears they were going a little faster than they should have,” Hunt said. “There was a dip in the sand on the other side of the (crest of the) dune, and the ATV went airborne.”
Three people were riding the ATV, with the teen on the back of the vehicle, Hunt said. The ATV flipped over, end to end, several times, and came to rest on the area where the teen was sitting.
“The family and the responders did their best, but he was badly injured,” Hunt said. “He died at the scene.”
The other two riders of that ATV said they were unhurt. In all, about nine family members were at the site, Hunt said.
The accident site, atop Sand Mountain, is about five miles south of the reservoir, Hunt said. The area is in Washington County, east of St. George.
