HYRUM, Utah, Oct. 26, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A startling discovery Friday by a Hyrum resident forced the evacuation of a number of nearby homes.
According to a press release from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, the evacuations were ordered after “what appeared to be old military ordnance” was found buried on the resident’s property.
Deputies from the CCSO responded to the scene and confirmed the find appeared to be military ordnance.
Out of an abundance of caution and “to ensure public safety, deputies evacuated nearby homes,” the press release said.
“The Sheriff’s Office coordinated with Hill Air Force Base, whose explosive ordnance disposal team” was called in to manage “the item’s safe removal and disposal.”
Residents were asked to avoid the immediate area while the ordnance disposal experts assessed the situation.
Lt. Tim Ramirez of the Cache County Sheriff’s Office told members of the media the HAFB Explosive Ordnance Disposal team ultimately determined that the prospective military ordnance was inert.
“The item was safely removed for disposal,” Ramirez said, “and residents were allowed to return to their homes.”
