DUCHESNE, Utah, June 3, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A heroic act turned deadly early Friday morning after a man tried to get his dog out of the roadway and they were both hit and killed, police said.
Utah Highway Patrol said in a news release the accident happened at approximately 5:20 a.m. on State Route 191 south of Duchesne.
Timothy A. Reed, 64, from Steamboat Springs, Colorado, who was traveling to Utah on business, had pulled his truck and trailer over to the side of a pullout just prior to mile post 283, according to officials.
A 2012 Ford Focus was traveling northbound, and struck Reed and his dog in the northbound travel lane.
“It appears that Reed stopped for an unknown reason and his dog, a black lab mix, ran into traffic,” the news release said. “It appears that he tried to save the dog but was killed on impact.”
Police said by all indications the man’s death was a tragic accident. Charges will not be filed against the driver that struck Reed.
