KEARNS, Utah, Dec. 11, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A family has been temporarily displaced after a fire erupted in one room of a single-family home Sunday afternoon.
Unified Fire Authority spokesman Matthew McFarland said the call came in to dispatch at 3:54 p.m., and the fire was extinguished less than 15 minutes later.
The home, at 5306 S. 4420 West, is near the fire station. McFarland said the flames were contained to one room, but the fire “burned hot” and there was heavy smoke damage throughout the structure.
A second alarm was called as a preliminary precaution, but was canceled, he said.
Firefighters first knocked down the fire from the exterior, then from the interior, McFarland said. They remained on the scene, checking for any hot spots or cinders, then cleaned up and secured the premises.
An adult and a child who reside in the house, and their dog, had evacuated before firefighters arrived. The American Red Cross responded to the scene to offer assistance, but McFarland said he believes the family was making their own arrangements for temporary living quarters. He had no dollar estimate of the damage but said the house was not a total loss.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but it’s possible that it started with a clothes dryer, McFarland said.
There were no injuries to residents or firefighters.
