SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 14, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Fire crews are asking people to avoid the area of 444 S. 900 East, as the street has been shut down due to a small gas leak.

Battalion Chief Les Goodwin, from the Salt Lake City Fire Department, said the leak was caused by a gas line being hit by an excavator at a construction site.

“We’ve actually quarantined the area off, and we’re waiting for Questar to come and shut it down at this point,” Goodwin said. “There’s no affected areas other than the construction site at this point. We haven’t evacuated anybody, and we’re just maintaining our position until the gas line has been shut down.”

Goodwin said there are no risks to children and teachers at the nearby Bennion Elementary School.

“We’ve assessed the hazard over at the school and there’s none over there whatsoever. There’s no gas drifting over that way.”
