Go Green, Or Go High Density Homes?

Nancy Aruscavage is a resident of South Salt Lake, and she is very concerned about what politicians are going to allow builders to do when they level the old Granite High School.

The area is zoned for residential housing, but Garbett Homes wants it to be zoned for high density housing, such as apartments.

“We do not want high density housing to be put up into the only available green space from Liberty Park to Murray Park,” said Aruscavage.

Garbett Homes recently bought the property, and their land acquisition chief wants the land re-zoned to allow high density homes, and they have been making a pitch to city leaders.

Jacob Ballstaedt is over Land Acquisition and Entitlement for Garbett Homes, and told Gephardt Daily that they want to work with the community to come up with a viable solution.

“I think it’s a property that deserves special attention and consideration,” said Ballstaedt. “We know it’s going to take a little time to understand all of the concerns of the residents.”

Nancy and the group organized, are very clear about their concerns. Mayor Cherie Wood is listening to all sides of the debate.

“I think it was a resounding ‘go back to the drawing boards,” Mayor Wood said. “The problem is that our community has very limited space, and when we make the decision, whatever the decision is, we may not have the green space.”

The only thing that is certain at this point is that Granite High School is coming down. What will go up in its place will likely be a subject for much debate in the months to come.
