UTAH COUNTY, Utah June 4, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert’s half-brother has been arrested in an Internet sex sting operation in Utah County.
Sgt. Spencer Cannon of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office told Gephardt Daily that Greg S. Peters, 56, was taken into custody by undercover agents after he arranged online to have sex with someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl.
In reality, Peters was communicating with an undercover officer.
“He arranged a meeting in Provo where he fully intended to engage in sex with a 13-year-old girl,” Cannon said.
“The fact that he was Gov. Herbert’s half-brother had no bearing on the investigation. We had no clue of that connection until he mentioned it to investigators after his arrest. It didn’t make a difference.”
Herbert’s office released a short statement Saturday night addressing local media outlets.
“Regardless of who is being accused, the governor finds these charges to be horrific,” the statement said. “The governor’s parents divorced at a young age, and the two were raised in different households.”
Peters has been charged with three 3rd degree felony counts of dealing in materials harmful to a minor.
He’s also been charged with a 2nd degree felony count of soliciting, seducing or luring a minor by internet or text.
Peters is being held in the Utah County jail on $25,000 bail.
I’m not a Gary Herbert supporter, but the link of Peters to Herbert was completely unnecessary and smacks of bad political reporting, especially during an election cycle. GD loses credibility over this one.
In agreement with Mr. Page. I clicked the article link expecting to read how an ARREST was somehow connected to the governor. To then discover this arrest has nothing to do with the governor whatsoever is more than annoying.
