CEDAR CITY, Utah, July 15, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The lightning-caused Graff Point Fire, about 4 miles south of Cedar City, has grown to 543 acres and remains at 0% contained.

The fire was reported Saturday and is burning on private property. Twenty structures are threatened.

“All efforts are being made to suppress the fire safely, and recent precipitation has helped to moderate its behavior,” says a Monday statement released by Utah Interagency Fire.

“Crews are actively engaged in full suppression efforts. The fire is burning in steep and rugged terrain, requiring hand crews to secure the fire line.

“Yesterday, hand crews anchored a handline at Hicks Creek, and today they will continue constructing a handline to the ridge.”

Air resources will support ground efforts, the statement says.

Conditions as of posting time were hot and dry, with low relative humidity, the post said.

“There is also a potential for thunderstorms and outflow winds later today, increasing the fire’s risk due to extremely dry fuels and the possibility of dry lightning,” it added.

Road closures are in effect for Tipple Road and Kannara Mountain Road.
