KANARRAVILLE, Utah, July 24, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Authorities have released the name of the man fatally shot July 17, while the suspect remains in jail on other charges.

“The deceased has been identified as Jonathan L. Brooks, a resident of Cedar City, Utah,” The Iron County Sheriff‘s Office said in a Tuesday news release. “At this time, no further information will be provided.”

The release provided no update on the status of the shooting suspect, Kyle Jessop, who called 911 to say he had shot Brooks, 33, according to the sheriff’s office press release of July 18, which was included in Tuesday’s update.

According to the earlier statement, the shooter was Kyle Jessop, 18, a resident of Kanarraville.

“At 7:53 PM, a 911 call was received from an 18-year-old resident of Kanarraville, Kyle Jessop, reporting that he had just shot another man who had attempted to sexually assault him,” reads the July 18 release.

“Jessop then secured the firearm inside the residence, cooperated with law enforcement, and was taken into custody without further incident.

“The victim was found outside the residence and, despite the efforts of medical personnel, succumbed to his injuries. Upon processing the scene, law enforcement located firearms and illicit substances within the residence.

“Iron County Sheriff’s Crime Scene personnel conducted a thorough investigation, and the case remains under active investigation at this time,” the earlier statement says.

”Jessop was interviewed by sheriff detectives and was later booked into the Iron County Jail. He now faces multiple charges, including possession of a dangerous weapon, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and unlawful consumption of alcohol as a minor.

“The case is ongoing, and we are awaiting the autopsy results. We will keep you updated as the investigation continues. We would also like to express our gratitude to the Cedar City Police Department and Gold Cross Ambulance for their swift response to the scene and the State Bureau of Investigation for their help processing the crime scene.

“The Iron County Sheriff’s Office is committed to ensuring a transparent and thorough investigation into this incident. We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
