SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 13, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah will play Yellowstone in a new Kevin Costner series.

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) announced today approved a film incentive for “Yellowstone” and for four other projects.

“Yellowstone” is expected to begin shooting next month, according to a statement from the Utah Film Commission.

Costner will star as John Dutton, the patriarch of the family that controls the country’s largest contiguous ranch, bordering the national park for which the series is named.

The project will play on the Paramount Network, soon to replace Spike TV. “Yellowstone,” also starring Wes Bentley, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, debuts in the summer of 2018.

Taylor Sheridan will return to Utah to write and direct “Yellowstone.”

Sheridan also wrote and directed Utah-made “Wind River,” to open Aug. 4.

“Utah is a really unique location as the mountains are so close to the city,” Sheridan said, in the prepared statement. “Coupled with its incentive program, experienced crew and the Park City Studios, I think Utah is at the forefront of what will become a much bigger film industry.”

The show is expected to generate an economic impact of more than $28 million and employ a cast and crew of more than 300, the Utah Film Commission statement said.

Other film projects GOED approved Thursday for incentives are:

• “Enchanted Christmas,” a holiday feature.

• A pilot episode for “Pupsicles,” a television series following the adventure of a family adjusting to their new life in a middle-of-nowhere snowy town.

• A new high school comedy series, to shoot in Utah this summer. Its name has not been revealed.

• “However Long,” a documentary that will tackle the subject of incurable disease, following women living with metastatic breast cancer. The film will be directed and produced by local filmmaker Jenny Mackenzie.

Combined with “Yellowstone,” the projects are expected to create a combined economic impact of over $36 million and create more than 500 local jobs, the Utah Film Commission statement said.

“Working with filmmakers to tell premium stories with compelling characters and unique locations is key for us,” said Virginia Pearce, UFC director.

“We are always happy to see talent return to Utah and to welcome new filmmakers to our community. Our goal remains to ensure that they have all the support and resources they need for production to run seamlessly and for them to return again and again to create award-winning content.”
