Update: Tabernacle Choir officials reported Saturday that the concert tickets were all gone in less than an hour of becoming available.
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Oct. 19, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Singer and actress Kristin Chenoweth will be the featured guest artist at this year’s Tabernacle Choir Christmas concert.
The Emmy- and Tony-winning artist will perform in December at the concerts by the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, formerly known as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
“Kristin Chenoweth is larger than life, I just hope the Conference Center can contain her performance,” Ron Jarrett, president of The Tabernacle Choir, said in a statement released Friday morning.
“We have a very special concert planned to showcase her tour de force talents, which will ring in the Christmas spirit in an unforgettable way.”
The statement says Chenoweth’s appearance at the concerts, scheduled for Dec. 13-15 at the LDS Conference Center, was a closely guarded secret, but that choir officials are excited about the upcoming concerts.
“Kristin Chenoweth will be among the most versatile voices to grace the conference hall stage,” music director Mack Wilberg said in the prepared statement.
“Just like the Choir and Orchestra, she is comfortable in a variety of styles, and we are delighted she has accepted our invitation to perform with us.”
Best chance at tickets
Tickets will become available at 10 a.m. Saturday, which is Oct. 20, through lds.org/events only, and are expected to go fast. Registered patrons can request four free tickets.
“Due to the high demand for tickets, patrons who do not set up an account in advance will probably not be successful in obtaining tickets,” the Tabernacle Choir announcement says.
Officials suggest setting up a patron account as soon as possible due to the anticipated rush for tickets.
Tickets will not be available by phone or in person.
The spectacle
Over the course of three nights, the concert — complete with dance, storytelling and visual effects, will be seen 60,000 at the Conference Center. It will also become a Christmas special to run on PBS and BYUtv in December of 2019.
Chenoweth won a 2009 Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in “Pushing Daisies,” and was nominated for two Emmy Awards and a People’s Choice Award for her role on “Glee.” In 1999, she won a Tony Award for “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” and was nominated for her original role of Glinda the Good Witch in “Wicked” in 2004. The “Wicked” cast album earned a 2005 Grammy Award.
Chenoweth is a classically trained coloratura soprano with a master’s degree in opera performance from Oklahoma City University, the statement says. As a soloist, she has performed to sold-out audiences across the world, including performances at Carnegie Hall and Royal Albert Hall.
