Two hurt in possible machete assault near homeless shelter

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 17, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are investigating after two people were assaulted Wednesday morning near a homeless shelter with what witnesses said was a machete.

A man got into an altercation with some people sleeping on the side of the road at 310 S. 500 West at approximately 3 a.m., the Salt Lake City Police Department said in a prepared statement.

The attacker hit a 50-year-old female on the back of the head with the weapon, then struck a 30-year-old man, cutting his ear.

The man fled on foot and was pursued by the group. He then pulled out a pistol and fired several shots in the air while running away.

Both victims were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. The suspect has been identified and the investigation is ongoing.
