DRAPER, Utah, March 10, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — A male passenger was critically injured Tuesday afternoon after being shot by a Riverton police officer during a traffic stop.
The Officer-Involved Critical Incident happened at about 4:30 p.m. during the traffic stop of a southbound vehicle on Interstate 15 near the Bangerter Highway Exchange.
After the officer discharged a service firearm, “the individual received immediate medical attention and was subsequently airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition. His current condition remains unknown at this time,” says a statement released by the Utah Department of Public Safety.
“The driver was taken into custody without incident,” according to the DPS statement.

“In accordance with standard procedure, the Salt Lake County Officer-Involved Critical Incident (OICI) Protocol Team 2 has been activated and is currently leading the investigation.”
No additional information about what led to the gunfire has been released.
Southbound I-15 was initially closed to all traffic near mile marker 289 (Draper). As of 9 p.m., three lanes were reopened, though motorists should expect continued delays as the scene is processed, the DPS statement says.

Although DPS/UHP is the venue agency, no UHP personnel were involved in the incident.
“As this is an active investigation, no further statements will be provided by DPS/UHP. All questions involving the incident moving forward should be directed to the Riverton Police Department.”
