SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, July 21, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — A man has been arrested after a shooting last year that injured a 6-year-old Kearns girl.

A probable cause statement from the 3rd District Court of Salt Lake County said Timothy Roy Begay, 18, is facing one charge of felony discharge of a firearm, a second-degree felony.

On Aug. 20, 2020, a shooting took place in the area of Westlope Drive in Kearns. The incident was subsequently reported by a neighbor at just after midnight on Aug. 21. The neighbor reported that she had heard three to four gunshots.

“Neighbor reported that her 6-year-old sister was hit by a stray bullet in the foot,” the statement said. “She said bullet only caused some bruising to the 6-year-old girl.”

The bullet also caused damage to the neighbor’s home, the statement said.

A woman who was in the suspect vehicle told officials that she had come to that area to fight another girl. She said that after she had fought the girl, the said girl starting breaking the windows of the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle attempted to leave when a man who was in the vehicle started shooting, the statement said.

On Sept. 28, 2020, Sandy police made contact with Begay as part of a separate investigation. Begay admitted to having a gun which had been reported as stolen. Officials said the gun was determined to be the same one used in the Kearns shooting.

Begay was arrested early Tuesday evening. He was transported to Salt Lake County Jail, with his bail set at $10,000.
