MIDVALE, Utah, March 9, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man wanted on several felony warrants, including aggravated robbery, was booked into jail Thursday night despite — or perhaps because of — his efforts to evade police.

A detective spotted the known suspect at a Maverik in Midvale a little before 8:30 p.m., Sgt. Zach Van Emmerik, of the Unified Police Metro Gang Unit, told Gephardt Daily.

The detective attempted to make a traffic stop as the suspect left the store’s parking lot and headed south on 700 East from 7200 South.

The suspect immediately fled and the detective pulled over and did not pursue.

While the detective was pulled over, he saw the car the suspect was driving crash up ahead. The suspect driver fled on foot as soon as the detective got to the car, Van Emmerik said.

Officers from the UPD Metro Gang Unit had been alerted. They pursued the suspect on foot and took him into custody just a short distance from the car.

Van Emmerik said the crash occurred when the suspect, traveling south on 700 East, neglected to stop and jumped the curb onto the sidewalk. He then drove onto a grassy area and crashed into a tree.

Medical personnel arrived on scene to check the man for injuries and determined “he was OK,” Van Emmerik said.

The suspect, who was not identified, was booked into jail on the aggravated robbery warrant and other felony warrants. Additional charges may be pending for fleeing from officers.
