SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 22, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A man has been booked into the Salt Lake County jail after police say he admitted to the stabbing death of his landlord.
Jesse Joel Bruce, 40, was booked Thursday evening on a preliminary charge of murder, a first-degree felony.
The dead man, 40-year-old Cory Haney, was found in the area of 797 E. Northcliff Drive, in the northeast area of the Avenues District in Salt Lake City.
Police responded to the scene just after 1:15 a.m. Thursday, the Salt Lake City Police Department said in a news release.
“Officers responded to the address on a report of a fight,” the police statement said. “A suspect was still on scene and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.”
A probable cause statement filed against Bruce says that SLCPD officers went to the scene in response to a 911 call.
“Officers responded to find a male with multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene,” the court document says. “The A/P (accused person) stated on the 911 call that he had stabbed his landlord. The A/P was transported to a hospital where he was treated and later released for his injuries.”
SLCPD detectives went to the hospital and interviewed Bruce.
“The A/P invoked his rights and asked for an attorney. The A/P then spontaneously
stated it was self-defense,” Bruce’s probable cause statement says.
“Based on the evidence collected from the crime scene detectives have reason to believe the A/P was the aggressor in this deadly confrontation.”
Bruce’s bail has been set at $100,000.
