GUNNISON, Utah, Dec. 24, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — Convicted murderer Mia Bailey, sentenced last week for the 2024 shooting deaths of her parents and aggravated assault of her brother, has been transferred from the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility to the Central Utah Correctional Facility, in Gunnison.

Bailey will be housed with male inmates, in keeping with Utah Code passed in 2024, which requires transgender inmates to be housed with inmates of their birth gender. Inmates can request to be housed with inmates whose birth gender does not match their own, and requests will be considered based on multiple factors.

Bailey, 30, was sentenced to two terms of 25 years to life in prison for the June 18, 2024 first-degree felony deaths of her parents, Joseph and Gail Bailey, in their Washington City home. They were 70 and 69, respectively.

For the third-degree felony assault, Bailey was sentenced to up to five years in prison. Bailey had pleaded guilty in November to the three charges.

“These sentences are to run consecutively to each other,” the court document says. “Rights to appeal are given.”

Fifth District Court Judge Keith C. Barnes delivered the sentences.

“Not less than 25 years” per death, served consecutively, means that — barring a successful appeal and reduced sentence — Bailey will spend at least 50 years in the Utah State prison.

Joseph Anthony Bailey and Gail Lynn Bailey are shown in their obituary photos.
