LAYTON, Utah, May 8, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The Utah Highway Patrol have identified the 75-year-old Davis County man killed in a collision on I-15 near Layton Sunday morning.
The accident happened at approximately 9 a.m. Sunday north of the Kaysville exit. Sgt. Nate Powell, of the Utah Highway Patrol, said witnesses report that a silver Toyota Camry, driven by Stephen Stumph of Clearfield, was traveling northbound at speeds greater than the other traffic on the roadway, which was wet from ongoing rain.
“The Camry lost control in these wet conditions, and it came to the right and sideswiped a Hyundai Elantra,” Powell said.
The dark plum-colored Elantra was knocked off the road and came to a rest in a low, grassy area on the east side of I-15.
“After the impact with the Elantra, that put the Camry back into live traffic, right in front of a 37-foot motor home,” Powell said. “The Camry collided in a T-bone fashion at the (Camry) driver door, and the driver of the Camry sustained fatal injuries from the impact.
The male fron-seat passenger of the Camry was transported via Airmed to the University of Utah Hospital with serious injuries.
“The driver and the passenger in the motor home were taken by ground ambulance to a local hospital, just minor injuries, just kind of shaken up,” Powell said. “The driver and the passenger of the Elantra, they didn’t receive any injuries.”
Powell said everyone involved was wearing seatbelts, and drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the accident.
“We believe speed and weather are the two main factors.”
The driver and passenger in the motor home are from Nevada, Powell said. The people in the Elantra are from outside of Utah, he said, adding he thought they were from Illinois but was not certain.
