SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 18, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A person of interest who had been riding with Cory Lee Henderson before he shot two Unified Police Officers, killing one, has been interviewed by the Salt Lake City Police Department and released.
“SLCPD has identified & talked to the female person of interest in the UPD Officer Doug Barney homicide….,” said one in a series of tweets posted on the SLCPD Twitter account Monday evening.
“She was the passenger in original traffic accident with Cory Henderson. She has been interviewed/released. Investigation is active/ongoing.”
“Thanks to the media and public for numerous tips and assistance in seeking her identity!!”
“No charges have been screened on the female person of interest. Investigation ongoing.”
“Any new information will be released when possible. Again, thanks to all for assisting in the search for this person of interest.”
The woman, initially described as a blonde Caucasian wearing a gray or green hoodie, was a passenger of Henderson. At 9:51 a.m. Sunday, the black BMW Henderson was driving was involved in an accident with a second car.
Henderson and his female passenger each left the scene, according to witnesses. UPD officer Doug Barney encountered Henderson, who shot him in the head before Barney could unholster his gun.
After more officers arrived on the scene, UPD officer Jon Richey encountered Henderson, who shot him three times. Richey and other officers returned fire, Henderson was killed.
Barney died at Intermountain Medical Center at 1:12 p.m. Sunday. Richey was treated, and his condition continues to improve.
Multiple law enforcement agencies on Sunday searched the area of the crash, near 2200 East and 4500 South, in Holladay, for the female person of interest.
A helicopter and K9 unites were brought in to search for Henderson’s female passenger, but failed to locate the woman, whose name has not been released, and whom police now say they have interviewed.
This is a developing story. It will be updated as more information becomes available.
