OGDEN, Utah, June 4, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) One man is dead, one is hospitalized, and an Ogden City Police officer is on administrative leave pending investigation after an early morning shooting Thursday that left a stabbing suspect dead.

OCPD officers were called at about 6 a.m. to an apartment in the area of 2300 Madison Ave. Police Chief Jake Sube shared preliminary details with reporters during a 1:30 p.m. news conference.

“Officers were dispatched to the apartment complex after receiving reports that a male was stabbing another male at this location. Due to the nature of the call, numerous officers responded,” Sube said.

“When officers arrived, they were allowed into the apartment, and once inside, they encountered an active struggle between two adult males.

“Based on the preliminary information available at this time, one male appeared to be actively stabbing the other male when officers entered the apartment during the encounter. One officer fired his department-issued handguns, striking the suspect. The suspect, an adult male, approximately 64 years old, died as a result of the shooting.”

The stabbing victim was removed from the apartment, and transported to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment, Sube said.

“He is currently listed in critical but stable condition and continues to receive medical care. The name of that victim is not being released at this time.” Sube did describe the victim as “an older male,” but said he did not currently have the man’s age.

“Preliminary information indicates the deceased suspect was a parole fugitive with an active parole warrant for his arrest. His name is also not being released at this time, pending notification of next of kin. The Weber County Critical Incident Investigation Team has been activated and is conducting an independent investigation into this incident. The Ogden Police Department has cooperated and will continue to fully cooperate with that investigation.”

Sube said there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

“I recognize that incidents involving loss of life are serious and concerning for our community,” he said. “It impacts families, officers, neighbors, and our broader community. As part of our standard procedure, the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the external investigation.”

The man killed had a warrant out for parole violations, it was later learned, Sube said. Multiple officers were in the apartment, but only one fired and has been placed on leave as a normal part of the officer-involved critical incident.

Sube said additional information would be released at a future date.
