Officer Involved Shooting in Parowan After Child Abuse Claims

PAROWAN, UTAH – July 13, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – Cedar City Police said a Parowan man was shot after he pointed a handgun at an officer after approaching him in an aggressive manner. The police department has now released the names of the officer and the suspect.

The officer, Tyler Uresk from the Parowan Police Department, was responding to the 800 West block of 200 South in Parowan on Thursday at around 9 p.m.

Police said a witness summoned the police after seeing the male suspect striking a minor child in the face. The officer arrived on scene and encountered the adult male suspect in the driveway of the home. The suspect pointed a handgun at the officer while approaching him aggressively. The officer fired two shots at the suspect striking him both times.

The suspect, Rocco Joseph Palmisano III, was treated on scene by officers and EMS for the gunshot wounds. He died prior to arrival at the hospital.

As per standard operating procedure, the Iron County Critical Incident Task Force is conducting the investigation into the shooting. The task force is made up of members from multiple agencies within Iron County.  It is anticipated that the investigation will be completed by the end of week. Once the investigation has concluded, the shooting will be reviewed by the Office of the Iron County Attorney.

Officer Uresk was not injured during the incident. As per standard operating procedure, Officer Uresk is on paid administrative leave until the investigation has been completed.
