TAYLORSVILLE, Utah, Dec. 4, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — The Unified Police Department has released the name of the man killed Wednesday afternoon in Taylorsville when a shed collapsed with him inside.
“The name of the deceased from the structure collapse in Taylorsville is David Sligar age 64, of Layton,” the UPD tweet said. “Our condolences to his family and friends.”
A second man was trapped inside the structure, but was recovered alive by first responders, including the Unified Fire Authority. The man was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition.
Unified Fire Authority spokesman Matthew McFarland said the incident occurred just after 2:10 p.m. in the area of 4700 S. 1908 West.
McFarland said a neighbor called officials about a structural collapse in a residential backyard, after they heard screams coming from that location.
Crews responded in three minutes and upon arrival found a detached outbuilding that had collapsed. Most of the roof collapsed in one piece, McFarland said, trapping two individuals underneath.
Within 15 minutes, structural collapse technicians were able to use cribbing, airbags, and pneumatic hydraulic tools to raise that structure and get one of the victims out. That person was transported to an area hospital.
The other person who was trapped is a confirmed fatality, McFarland said.
He added the structure was about 15 feet by 15 feet and it appears some construction work was underway. An investigation into the incident has begun.
McFarland said the added snow load may have contributed to the instability of the structure.
Traffic was diverted from the area during the operation.
Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
