OGDEN, Utah, June 15, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Fire crews from Ogden and Roy responded to a structure fire at 446 E. 20th St. shortly after 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The home is east of Washington Boulevard, near Ogden Avenue.
Crews had the fire extinguished and were ventilating the structure within about five minutes, according to Ogden Battalion Chief Hal Van Meeteren, who said it was “an exceptionally quick knockdown.”
Van Meeteren told Gephardt Daily that when crews arrived there was heavy fire coming from the upstairs rear. They fought the fire from inside the structure.
The occupants of the upstairs quarters, where the fire started, were not home at the time and arrived while the fire department was on scene. The people living downstairs were able to leave the home safely, and there were no injuries to anyone.
Van Meeteren said “a couple of pets are missing, but we suspect they’re hiding somewhere.”
Officials haven’t determined the cause of the fire, but investigators were on the way to the scene. Damage was estimated at $50,000. Van Meeteren said the building is not habitable, and the Red Cross was notified to assist both displaced families.
Responding were 17 firefighters from Ogden and Roy fire departments, with three ladder trucks, one engine, a paramedic rescue, an ambulance, and the battalion chief.
