WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Oct. 7, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — One person dead and another in custody in what appears to be a road rage shooting Monday morning on State Route 201.

The person in custody is cooperating with officers, according to Sgt. Cameron Roden, Utah Highway Patrol.

The incident reportedly happened at about 5:20 a.m. Monday on eastbound SR 201 and about 900 West, Roden told Gephardt daily.

“There was a ‘shots fired’ incident. One individual is deceased, the other involved party is in custody. They are working with law enforcement,” Roden said at 10:12 a.m.

“The scene is still a really active scene, on 201, so that’s why it’s closed eastbound. The ramp coming from I-215 is closed, and the ramp coming from Redwood Road is closed, so any traffic eastbound is forced to exit at Redwood Road.”

“We believe that the road rage is involved, but of course, that can change as our investigation proceeds.”

Roden said he did not have information on the genders of those involved. He did say the roadway is expected to remain closed for another two to three hours, and could reopen at noon or 1, but that’s just an estimate.

The Salt Lake City School District sent out a notice to alert parents that many of its buses have been caught in the backed up traffic.

“Due to road closures across the city, particularly on State Road 201, many of our buses have been caught in extremely heavy traffic this morning and will be late to pick up students this morning.

“You can track the status of your student’s bus on the Zum app. Thanks for your patience and understanding.”

Gephardt Daily will have more information as it becomes available.
