SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah, Jan. 3, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) — Wildlife officials euthanized a cougar in Summit County Sunday after it killed one family dog and injured another.

Officials received reports of a cougar sighting in Summit Park around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, said Scott Root, conservation outreach manager for the central region of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.

Root said the cougar injured one dog, a black Labrador-pointer mix. A second dog, an Australian shepherd, was found dead under the family’s deck later in the morning.

Root said Summit Park is a mountainous area, but also a residential community, and there are houses all around the home where the attack happened.

The cougar was euthanized due to concern that it could attack other animals or humans, in keeping with Utah DWR policy, Root said. He added that the cougar will be checked for disease.
