SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 12, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A 28-year-old man who was killed after a pickup truck ran a red light Wednesday afternoon in Salt Lake City has been identified.
Salt Lake Police said Marcus Ortega of Salt Lake City died in the accident that happened at approximately 2 p.m. at 1700 South and 900 West.
Det. Cody Lougy of the Salt Lake City Police Department, said a gray Plymouth Neon was traveling eastbound, going through a green light, when it was struck by someone who ran a red light going northbound on 900 West.
“The collision severely impacted the Neon,” Lougy said. “In the Plymouth was also a 6-year-old girl. She had just minor injuries, and was transported to Primary Children’s Hospital in stable condition, and a passenger.”
Ortega was the passenger in the Neon.
The driver, 35-year-old female, was treated on scene and released. Both the 23-year-old male driver of the pickup and a male passenger were transported to the hospital in stable condition.
“We just reviewed some video surveillance from the 7-Eleven behind me, and fortunately for us for the investigation everything was caught on the surveillance video and it shows the vehicle ran a red light,” he added.
Lougy said the investigation is ongoing, and the charges will be determined at a later time.
The intersection was shut down until approximately 4 p.m., and power was also out in the area.
Lougy said he did not know if the people involved were wearing seatbelts or whether excessive speed was a factor. He did say no evidence of drugs or alcohol was found in either vehicle.
