DRAPER, Utah, Jan. 13, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — You might think going to Waffle Love and then heading over to the Fairfield Inn would be a great Saturday night date — unless you’ve just parked a stolen car and realize the police are right behind you.

Draper Police Sgt. Mathew Coe told Gephardt Daily that’s pretty much what happened a little before 10 p.m., when an officer spotted a stolen vehicle occupied by two adults, a man and a woman.

“They pulled into Waffle Love,” Coe said, “and as soon as they pulled in and got out (of the vehicle), the officer activated his lights, and they took off on foot.”

Coe said the officer yelled at them to stop, but they continued to flee.

Other officers, including some from outside agencies, arrived on scene to help set up a containment area.

According to Google Maps, it’s a six-minute walk from Waffle Love, at 12291 State St., to the Fairfield Inn at 12117 State St.

Google Maps doesn’t say how long it takes if you’re running from the police.

Coe said that, while officers were still setting up containment, “an employee at the Fairfield Inn called in and said he had two people that just jumped into the Dumpster and were hiding there.

“They matched the description of the suspects, so we were able to locate them and took them into custody safely.”

Coe added, “When we inventoried the vehicle, there was a loaded firearm in there with the serial number scraped off, so it’s a good thing to get these guys off the street.”

It’s still early in the investigation, and the sergeant didn’t know where the vehicle was stolen from, but he said the owner would be located and the vehicle returned.

As for the two suspects, they are now in jail and facing multiple felony charges.
