OGDEN, Utah, June 6, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — One person was injured Wednesday evening when police say a driver fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed into two cars parked in the driveway of an Ogden home.

Officers responded about 5:50 p.m. to a home in the 2800 block of Harrison Boulevard, where the 22-year-old driver of a Cadillac veered across the southbound lanes and crashed in the driveway, the Ogden City Police Department said in a news release Thursday.

One person was working on one of the vehicles in the driveway and was in the driver’s seat at the time of the crash, police said. He was taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

“Two traffic investigators responded to the scene and determined that the driver had fallen asleep behind the wheel, which caused him to cross lanes and strike the parked cars,” the release says.

The investigation concluded that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash, police said. The 22-year-old driver received a citation and was released.

“This incident serves as a critical reminder of the dangers associated with drowsy driving. Drowsy driving is a serious and often underestimated hazard. It can slow reaction times, impair decision-making, and significantly increase the risk of accidents.

“According to the Utah Department of Public Safety Highway Safety Office, 2% of motor vehicle crashes in Utah involve a drowsy driver. We urge all community members to prioritize their safety and the safety of others by avoiding drowsy driving,” the release says.
