SALT LAKE CITY – September 29, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – Utahns supporting Planned Parenthood are gathering at the Utah State Capitol beginning at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
Earlier on Tuesday, students at the University of Utah were encouraged to wear pink and rally in the Marriott Library Plaza. U of U Students for Choice chalked messages of support for Planned Parenthood on the sidewalks outside the library.
Pink Out Day rallies are planned in about two dozen cities across the country. Organizers say there are “over a million Americans who are sick and tired of the relentless attacks on reproductive health care,” and this is their chance to speak out.
On Monday, The Planned Parenthood Association of Utah announced plans to file a lawsuit against Governor Gary Herbert over his executive order prohibiting state agencies from distributing federal money to Planned Parenthood.
In announcing the lawsuit, Utah Planned Parenthood CEO Karrie Galloway said, “While we have always known that playing politics with the lives of Utahns is wrong and short-sighted, we have learned that Governor Herbert’s actions are also unconstitutional.”
This morning, a U.S. District Judge granted Utah’s Planned Parenthood a restraining order to make sure no funding is cut off to the organization until the courts or Congress decide how to proceed with challenges to its status.
Gephardt Daily will be at Tuesday’s state capitol gathering and will provide coverage throughout the afternoon.
