SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 19, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City is inviting residents to a guided dialogue to help strengthen police-community relationships.
Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski and Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown will participate in the Thursday evening workshop, entitled “Transforming Together,” with the aim of fostering constructive dialogue and address steps being taken to strengthen relationships between police and the community, according to a news release.
The program and reception are from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., with registration for a half-hour before that. The event will be held at the Sorenson Unity Center, 1383 S. 900 West.
The news release said: “Through a structured and guided process, members of the public will be encouraged to provide feedback and to help further refine ongoing efforts to transform and bolster police and civilian relationships in Salt Lake City – including de-escalation training, use-of-force policy, the role of the Civilian Review Board, and training and hiring of police officers.”
Information on how to get involved with the Salt Lake City Human Rights Commission and the Community Advisory Board will also be presented.
The evening is being organized with cooperation by the Community Action Group, a coalition of community members representing community members from the ACLU, NAACP, Black Lives Matter, Community Coalition for Police Reform, and Cop Watch SLC. Coalition members have been meeting with Brown since February.
