Severe thunderstorm hits Wasatch Front

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 9, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Friday evening for Salt Lake County and the Wasatch Front.

Short of advising the wearing of helmets, the agency’s Salt Lake City office advised residents take cover.

“For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.”

Winds up to 60 mph were forecast, hail, and likely damage to roofs, siding and trees.

“At 6:16 PM MDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from Ogden to Salt Lake City, moving east at 20 mph. A 58 mph wind gust was observed in Syracuse associated with these thunderstorms.”

In addition to Salt lake County, the agency said locations impacted include Ogden, Layton, Farmington, Hill Air Force Base, Clearfield, Kaysville, South Ogden, Washington Terrace, Riverdale, South Weber, Marriott-Slaterville, Uintah, Weber State University, West Haven, Farr West, Harrisville, Fruit Heights, Mountain Green, Pineview Reservoir, and East Layton.

“This includes the following highways: Interstate 15 between mile markers 325 and 335, and between mile markers 340 and 345. Interstate 84 between mile markers 82 and 94.”
