SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah, Aug. 7, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Summit County Search and Rescue has scaled back the search for Melvin Heaps, a 74-year-old man who has been missing since July 31.
In a news release Sunday night, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office stated:
“After six (6) days of intense searching for 74 year old Melvin Heaps,
Summit County Search & Rescue will be scaling down the search as of 6:00pm,
August 6, 2017. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office and Search & Rescue have
worked diligently, and has exhausted many resources in hopes of finding
Melvin. The search will continue, but with limited resources.
We wish to thank the many experts and volunteers from so many
committed agencies and organizations. The assisting agencies and
organizations include:
— United States Forest Service
— Utah Department of Public Safety
— Wasatch County Search & Rescue
— Utah Search Dogs
— Great Basin K9 Search & Rescue
— United States Air Force – Civil Air Patrol
— The Garrett Bardsley Foundation & Many Volunteers
— Denise’s Home Plate, Coalville (Meals for searchers)”
The SCSO is also asking anyone who has or had a trail camera anywhere in the Crystal Lake area to call the sheriff’s office at 435-615-3600.
Heaps, an avid hiker, set out for a day hike the morning of Monday, July 31, but did not return. His car was found at the Crystal Lake Trailhead.
Ground and air searches had been conducted since Tuesday morning.
