SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 10, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Officers assigned to the Liberty Patrol Division have safely arrested a 36-year-old man who is accused of breaking into a bike shop in the Sugar House neighborhood.

This investigation began at 1:37 a.m. on Sunday when dispatch received information about a burglary in progress at a bike store, located at 2107 S. 700 East. As officers responded, they learned a video feed inside the business showed the suspect still inside.

Officers arrived to find the glass front door of the building smashed and the metal security gate bent back. Officers began checking the building’s exterior while waiting for additional officers to arrive so they could clear the building.

During their search outside, officers saw a man matching the suspect’s description. The officers ordered for the man to stop running, but he refused. After a short chase, officers safely took the suspect into custody in a nearby parking lot.

The suspect is identified as Ryan Brenner.

During the investigation, officers found Brenner in possession of drug paraphernalia and burglary tools.

The damage to the business is estimated to be more than $1,500 but under $4,999 and the amount of merchandise stolen is valued at more than $500 but under $1,499.

Officers booked Brenner into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of burglary, causing property damage, theft, failing to stop at the command of a police officer, interfering with a police officer, possession of burglary tools, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

In late October 2024, officers assigned to the Liberty Patrol Division began noticing an increase in bike shop burglaries. In several of the cases, the suspect would force entry into the shops and steal merchandise, equipment, and/or e-bikes, including a bike valued at $1,400.

In response, the SLCPD’s Liberty Patrol Division’s District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) began proactive community efforts, including meeting with every bike shop in the patrol division to implement preventative measures against burglaries. Patrol officers also began increasing their presence around bike shops.

SLCPD detectives have not determined whether Brenner is connected to the recent increase in burglaries at other bike shops.
