SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 18, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City Police responded to the scenes of two cases of reported gunfire early Saturday morning, with at least one incident resulted in a shooting injury.
The first investigation started at 3:15 a.m. with calls to dispatch about people hearing gunshots in the area of 1750 W. 1700 South.
“Based on the preliminary investigation, a fight broke out that resulted in multiple shots being fired,” says a statement issued by SLCPD Public Relations. “After the shooting, several people involved left the area on foot and likely in cars. Officers locked down the area and identified an apartment with several witnesses inside.”
During the investigation, “officers found a 20-year-old man with a surface injury to his extremity. Detectives do not believe the injury is related to the shooting.”
Officers detained several witnesses from the apartment and a nearby parking lot, but no arrests had been made at the time of the police public relations statement.
“Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit responded to the scene. Due to the investigation having a gang-nexus, gang detectives will lead the investigation,” the SLCPD statement says. “Anyone with information on this case is asked to call 801-799-3000 and reference case number 24-107224.”
Second incident
The second incident involving gunfire was called in by area residents at about 5:30 a.m. Police responded to the area of west Indiana Avenue and Navajo Street.
“Officers arrived and learned a fight broke out between acquaintances. During the fight, a shooting occurred,” the SLCPD PR statement says.
“One person, a 17-year-old male, had a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his extremity. Based on the available information, officers are investigating the shooting as a domestic violence-related incident.”
