SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Oct. 12, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A 35-year-old man has been hospitalized with critical injuries after a two-car collision downtown late Friday.

Dispatch was alerted at 11:45 p.m. to the crash at 400 South and State Street.

“Officers found two cars heavily damaged blocking the road. Inside one of the cars, officers found a man critically injured,” a Salt Lake City Police statement says.

“Detectives believe the man did not have a seatbelt on when the crash happened. Paramedics took him to the hospital in critical condition.”

Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe the man ran a red light while traveling east on 400 South and collided with a car traveling north on State Street.

The crash resulted in a closure of the intersection and TRAX being disrupted for several hours. Aside from the 35-year-old man, no other injuries were reported.

“SLCPD detectives are working to determine whether impairment and excessive speeds are factors in the crash,” the statement says, adding that the Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (CAR) Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians were brought in to investigate the scene.
