SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 22, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A man is in custody after police say he used a pipe from a large metal umbrella to vandalize seven vehicles including a police car and a fire engine in downtown Salt Lake City Wednesday.

Officers booked Allaeldin Abdelrahim, 39, into jail for aggravated assault and criminal mischief, said the Salt Lake City Police Department in a news release.

The incident took place at 235 S. Rio Grande St. at approximately 3:40 p.m. Wednesday.

“Dispatch received several calls of a man in the Rio Grande district running around with a pipe, vandalizing cars,” the news release said.

“At the same time, Salt Lake City Fire personnel were in the area on another call when they could hear the male hitting the back of one of their fire engines with a metal pipe.

“The suspect then started to run at the firefighters with the pipe in hand and they immediately called for police assistance. The firefighters took a defensive stance and then attempted to surround the suspect who then decided to drop the pipe and give up.”

Fire personnel held the suspect until police officers arrived and took him into custody. Investigators believed the suspect stole a large umbrella from the patio of a local business and vandalized vehicles until he came in contact with fire personnel.

Five civilian vehicles, a police car and a fire engine were vandalized, causing an estimated $5,000 in damages.
