SPRINGVILLE, Utah, Nov. 23, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A student reportedly brought a gun to Springville High School on Wednesday, police said in a Facebook post Friday.

The Springville Police Department posted, “We had an incident at the high school this week where a student may have brought a handgun to class.”

According to the police, the faculty was notified and they alerted the school resource officer who, in turn, called for additional officers.

“The suspect student had left the school and we found him at home,” the post continues. “The suspect’s family had been cooperating with our investigation (that should be completed today).”

Parents of students posted a number of comments, most expressing some level of concern that they hadn’t been made aware of the gun-related investigation until it had been underway for two days.

Springville PD anticipated that concern.

“We know there will be questions as to why we are only talking about this now when it happened on Wednesday. Know that the most important thing to us is the safety of your kids.

“Had this been an emergency, we would have notified you immediately. We felt in this case, it wasn’t, and we started our investigation.”

The police said they didn’t want to spread “bad information” without the basis of facts, and they don’t want to spread panic in the school.

“We appreciate the courage of the student who came forward with the information in the first place,” Springville PD wrote. “We appreciate the relationship we have with the Nebo School District and the SHS facility, they have been excellent to work with and absolutely care about your kids!”

No information about the outcome of the investigation was available Friday night.
