SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, April 11, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspect is in critical condition and two others on the loose after a shooting Wednesday night in Salt Lake City.
Officers responded to the area of 200 W. Paxton Ave. (1155 South) at about 10:15 p.m. after getting reports of shots fired, a woman screaming and people running.
“We arrived and actually found a man bleeding, (who) had been shot, on the street north of here, on Fremont,” Lt. Dave Cracroft, Salt Lake City Police Department, said at the scene. “Turns out he is one of our suspects.”
The man was originally talking to police, Cracroft said, but had been shot in the abdomen and “took a turn for the worse” and “went downhill.” The critically injured man was taken to University Hospital and was undergoing immediate surgery.
“I got a bunch of convoluted stories, and I still don’t know for sure exactly what’s happened,” Cracroft said at 11:15 p.m. “The best I can get pieced together is our resident here heard noise in her backyard … so they go out in the yard to check and they find our three suspects, and there’s a confrontation there.
“The suspects possibly tried to chase them and push them back into the home, I’m just not sure,” Cracroft said. “One of the residents ended up shooting one of our suspects.”
A suspect may have shot back, Cracroft said, saying he had conflicting information, and the exact details were still under investigation.
“Our (two other) suspects ran down the alley and fled northbound. They did have a gun, and that’s where we are. Officers are out combing the area, looking for suspects.”
None of the residents were injured, Cracroft said. Police speculate the suspects planned to rob the home. The residents say the men were unknown to them.
Detectives had been called to the scene, and would be taking victims and witnesses to the station for formal interviews, Cracroft said.
Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
