WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, March 28, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — A woman who reportedly ran a red light in her SUV has died after colliding with a heavy duty tow truck at a West Valley City intersection.

Lt. Bill Merritt, West Valley City police, told Gephardt Daily the collision happened just before 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and officers responded to the scene, at 4100 South and Mountain View Corridor.

The woman in the SUV was traveling east, and had a red light. The tow truck was northbound on Mountain View Corridor, and had the green light.

“The SUV was the at-fault vehicle. Unfortunately, the driver of the SUV has passed away,” Merritt said. “They were taken to the hospital, they were not able to save that person.

“The driver of the tow truck does have some injuries, but they’re not life threatening, and he’s going to be fine.”

Neither vehicle had a passenger, Merritt said. Because of the fire’s intensity, “we took a while to be able to get to where we could actually get a plate or a vin or anything like that, and then try to identify the person who was driving.”

Next of kin is being notified, Merritt says.

The tow truck was the variety able to tow a semi, he said. It has some charring from the fire. The SUV was destroyed in the collision and subsequent fire.
