SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, June 8, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — The South Jordan Police Department has announced the arrest of a teen described as the “main suspect” in the shooting death of 19-year-old Kelly Glaubensklee at a graduation party.
Now in custody is Anthony Rendon, 18, who was arrested early Tuesday at his family’s home in West Jordan, a SJPD statement says. Rendon is believed to have gang ties, a statement filed in the case says.
“Anthony is suspected of being the shooter in the death of Kelly Glaubensklee, and was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of Aggravated Murder (Felony 1) and Felony Discharge of a Firearm in the Direction of a Person (Felony 3),” the statement says.
“Detectives are still following up on leads as they look for the remaining two passengers that were in the vehicle when the shooting occurred. If anyone has information about this incident, you are asked to contact the South Jordan Police Department at 801-840-4000.”
In all, Rendon’s affidavit says, he faces charges of:
- Aggravated murder, a first-degree felony
- 12 counts of felony discharge of a firearm, shooting in the direction of a person, a third-degree felony.
Rendon is being held without bail at the Salt Lake County Jail. A juvenile was previously arrested in the case, officials have said.
Rendon’s affidavit says that at 1:57 a.m. June 6, which was Sunday, South Jordan Police responded to 1472 W. 11400 South on a fight in progress with shots fired.
“South Jordan officers arrived on the scene and found a large number of people,” the statement says. “Reportedly, one male was shot. The location is a residence where a party was occurring. It was reported that several different individuals were invited to this party via Snap Chat and other social media outlets. Many of the individuals at the party were unknown to each other.”
Witnesses reported that several people were involved in a physical altercation where punches were thrown, and a female was punched by an unknown male. Shortly afterward, the same group engaged in a second physical fight.
A GoFundMe page reportedly set up to help for Glaubensklee’s funeral describes him as a person who, “If he saw someone needed help, he was there, especially in school with the kids that didn’t stand up for themselves.”
At the shooting scene, “Several individuals were seen entering a vehicle and started to leave when the vehicle stopped,” the affidavit says, adding that multiple people surrounded the bright blue car and kicked it, causing damage, as it started to drive away.
“When the vehicle stopped, a male, later identified as Anthony Dominic Rendon, displayed a firearm while inside the vehicle, pointed the firearm at several individuals at the party and discharged a .40 caliber weapon,” the statement says. “Thirteen silver .40 caliber spent shell casings were recovered from the crime scene, one of the shell casings was identified as Hornady.”
The website for Hornady bullets describes them as having the effect of “Ten bullets through one hole.”
“One adult male, Kelly Glaubensklee, was struck with a single bullet in the chest,” the South Jordan Police statement says. “Live saving efforts were made to help Kelly; however, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Kelly is the same person who engaged in a physical fight with the juvenile male who was driving the vehicle Anthony shot from.”
“Witnesses stated the shooter leaned out of the window and started shooting. Several videos were captured from witnesses at the party and provided to the initial officers on scene.”
Videos showed the shooting came from the position where Rendon was seated in the car, the police statement says.
South Jordan Police detectives made phone contact with Rendon on Monday, first speaking with a female at his family residence, who confirmed the suspect’s name and address.
“Anthony’s father advised after the initial phone call he asked Anthony why the police were looking for him,” the affidavit says. “Anthony didn’t provide him any information; however, Anthony later turned over a .40 caliber handgun to his father.
“During the execution of a search warrant on Anthony’s residence, detectives located two different types of silver hollow point bullets in his bedroom. The bullets located appear to be the same as the shell casings which were recovered at the crime scene, with one brand being Hornady. Two .40 caliber handguns were recovered from the home.”
Initial autopsy examination revealed Glaubensklee “was a healthy young adult, with a predetermined cause of death is homicide. A single slug was located with the body of Kelly and identified as a hollow point bullet.”
“Anthony is believed to have gang ties, as he was seen in a video with several individuals flashing gang signs,” the statement says.
“Anthony displayed an indifference for human lives when he discharged a firearm at a crowd of persons.”
