WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH – November 17, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – A teen who took his grandparents’ vehicle for an unauthorized joyride crashed into a power pole Tuesday morning.

According to West Valley City police spokesperson Roxeanne Vainuku, police were called just after 1 a.m. to investigate downed power lines lying across 5200 West.

“It was observed someone had struck the power pole and fled the scene,” Vainuku said. “Officers followed the liquid trail from the vehicle to 5340 West 4160 South where the vehicle was located with significant damage and airbag deployment.”

Officers learned the teen had taken a joyride in the vehicle without the permission of his grandparents. The teen told officers he had fallen asleep while driving before hitting the power pole.

Vainuku said the grandparents requested the teen be charged so he was cited and referred to the juvenile courts for joyriding, hit-and-run and driving on an expired drivers license.
