SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Feb. 21, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City Police were at the scene of a crash and rollover on California Avenue late Wednesday night.
SLCPD Sgt. Kevin Stayner said the accident occurred shortly before 10 p.m., when a Subaru heading south on 3600 West came through the intersection and was struck by a cargo truck eastbound on California.
“One of those 26,000-pound trucks,” Stayner said. “Obviously, the Subaru got the brunt of that, and we are investigating the driver of the Subaru for DUI.”
Stayner said the truck simply wasn’t able to stop, and the impact of the collision caused the truck to roll over.
He added that he hadn’t been able to really look at the truck, but it’s possible that the car went under it, causing it to roll.
The injuries sustained in the crash were a lot less severe than anyone would have expected, Stayner said.
The driver of the Subaru was transported to the hospital “walking and talking,” he said. The truck’s driver was “fine and walking around” at the scene.
Later, the truck’s driver told Gephardt Daily that his cargo consisted of 26,000 pounds of contact lenses, and when the truck tipped and the load shifted, the truck slid about 100 feet on its side.
“The noise was unbelievable,” he said.
Sgt. Stayner said the position of the truck on the roadway had everything blocked, and officials were working to get at least one lane open as quickly as possible. He estimated they would have the area cleared by 12:30 a.m.
