CACHE COUNTY, Utah, Sept. 1, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Police took a 17-year-old male into custody Saturday afternoon and later located a second juvenile after the pair allegedly took a vehicle from a youth treatment center in Cache County.
According to a Utah Highway Patrol news release, the incident began at about 1:15 p.m. when the 17-year-old driver and a 15-year-old male passenger allegedly took the vehicle and then tried to evade a trooper who was on a motorcycle in Cache County.
The trooper didn’t pursue them, but forwarded the information and vehicle’s location to Box Elder County officers.
The vehicle was seen heading south on Interstate 15 at 1:36 p.m., and when a trooper pulled up along side, the juveniles swerved into his vehicle. The trooper tried to push them toward the guardrail to stop them, the news release states, but they swerved around the guardrail, drove down the dirt embankment west of the freeway, and crashed.
The juveniles left the car and fled on foot “west through fields and a marshy area toward Ellwood,” the release says.
Box Elder Sheriff’s Office, Tremonton and Garland police, and DNR Wildlife Enforcement assisted in setting up a containment area and a K-9 from Garland/Tremonton was deployed. Brigham City Police Department also brought in a K-9.
The 17-year-old who had been driving the vehicle was located and taken into custody. He was booked into the juvenile detention facility in Cache County.
The 15-year-old passenger was still being sought at 5 p.m., but he was later found and taken into custody by UHP.
