SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 27, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A head-on crash involving a wrong-way driver shut down westbound Interstate 80 and sent one person to a hospital in serious condition Monday afternoon, police said.

Just before 3 p.m., a vehicle reported as driving recklessly went off the road near mile marker 111, turned around and began heading east in the westbound lanes, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden said.

“That vehicle hit a pickup truck pulling a horse trailer head-on,” Roden told Gephardt Daily.

The wrong-way driver was later transported by medical helicopter to an area hospital in serious condition, he said.

Only minor injuries were reported to the driver of the truck, Roden said. No injuries to the horses were reported.

Westbound I-80 was shut down and later limited to one lane while officials investigated the crash.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
